Tasting Notes

The nose is high-toned and precise, offering aromas of lemon, quince, green apple, and sorrel, layered with citrus peel, subtle stone fruit, light herbal notes, and an impression of sea spray and stony minerality. On the palate, it is brisk and linear, driven by puckering acidity and gentle effervescence that give the wine an immediately drinkable quality. Flavors of Meyer lemon, crisp apple, underripe pear, and grapefruit are joined by fresh green herbs and sea spray. The texture is light and lifted, with enough concentration from older vines to add depth without weight. The finish is dry, clean, and distinctly mineral, with a lingering salty note that invites another sip.

Critical Acclaim:

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast. Fresh, jovial, mouthwatering -- the classic spritzy verve of its region -- but here with older vines that add a little more oomph. Flavors of crisp pear, citrus, white herbs with a sea fresh finish. — Elaine Chukan Brown

Food Pairing

This style pairs naturally with the food traditions of the Basque coast, where simple preparations highlight the quality of raw ingredients. The wine’s acidity and light structure make it well suited to seafood, particularly dishes that emphasize brine, olive oil, and subtle seasoning. Fresh anchovies, grilled fish, or lightly dressed shellfish align well with its citrus and saline profile, while the slight effervescence helps cleanse the palate and balance oil and salt. It also works effectively with lightly fried dishes, where its brightness offsets richness without overwhelming the food.

About the Producer

Set along the Cantabrian coast just west of San Sebastián, Getariako Txakolina DO is a small but active wine region shaped by both tourism and a strong food culture. Within this setting, the Lazkano family has farmed vineyards around their traditional stone farmhouse, or caserío, for more than a century. Gaintza Txakolina was founded in 1923 by Andrés Lazkano as a modest estate producing wine primarily for family use, with small amounts sold locally. Over time, it has developed into a small-scale winery with a guesthouse and tasting space, reflecting the region’s emphasis on hospitality. Now in its fourth generation, the estate is run by brothers Joseba and Urtzi Lazkano, with Joseba overseeing winemaking alongside their mother and Urtzi managing 23 hectares of sustainably farmed, pergola-trained vineyards. The family focuses on indigenous varieties and has contributed to raising the profile of the region, which was once known mainly for simple, lightly sparkling wines. In keeping with local tradition, the estate is commonly referred to by its house name, Gaintza.
