Tasting Notes

Aromas lean toward blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, with secondary notes of graphite, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness that reflects the site. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with firm, well-defined tannins and a linear spine that carries through the finish. The fruit remains controlled but concentrated, balanced with brambly notes and savory spices that continue through to an impressive finish.

Critical Acclaim:

93 points Clive Pursehouse (Decanter): "Justin Neufeld coaxes finesse from the powerful Ciel du Cheval site, one of the foundations of the Red Mountain AVA, with 100% clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine spends 19 months in 55% new French oak barrels. Aromas of red currants, ripe muddled strawberries and desert sage are framed with a mineral intensity of crushed basalt—plush on the mouth with more concentrated red fruits with plenty of savoury spice. There's ample structure and lift that balance things out nicely. This wine is a baby and should be aged for five to eight years before it really begins to show its potential. Drinking Window: 2025-2033. (Jan 2025)"

About the Producer

JB Neufeld is a boutique Washington winery that reflects the experience and intent of its founder, Justin Neufeld, who has spent much of his career working behind the scenes for some of the state’s most respected producers. Before establishing his own label, he built a reputation through roles at larger, quality-focused wineries, where he developed a strong command of both vineyard sourcing and cellar technique. JB Neufeld emerged as a more personal project, allowing him to focus on small-lot wines that emphasize site transparency over house style. Rather than relying on estate vineyards, the winery works with carefully selected sites—often long-established and highly regarded—across the Columbia Valley, with particular attention to Red Mountain. Production remains limited, and the winemaking approach is deliberately restrained: fermentation and aging choices are made to support structure and clarity, with oak used judiciously and extraction kept in check.
