Tasting Notes

The 2020 Bertrand-Delespierre “Les Fourneaux” Coteaux Champenois Chamery Blanc is a rare, still white wine (not sparkling) from the Champagne region of France. Unlike the famous bubbles from this area, this "Coteaux Champenois" is a dry, still wine made from estate-grown fruit in the Premier Cru village of Chamery. 100% Chardonnay, and from vines planted on clay-limestone soil in 1989. The wine is fermented and aged in 600L demi-muids for at least two years. Only 770 bottles produced.

About the Producer

Owned and operated by Didier Bertrand and Chantal Delespierre, Bertrand-Delespierre is a 24-acre grower-producer estate located in the Montagne de Reims between Reims and Épernay, with all holdings in Premier Cru vineyards, primarily in Chamery, alongside parcels in Villedommange, Écueil, and Montbré. The vineyards are planted to roughly 10 acres of Pinot Noir, 7.5 acres each of Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with vines averaging over 25 years of age and some exceeding 50 years. As a récoltant manipulant, the estate farms its own fruit and produces wines exclusively from its vineyards, reflecting a clearly artisanal approach. In the cellar, grapes are pressed in small lots using a traditional wooden basket press, and malolactic fermentation is generally avoided to preserve freshness and aromatic clarity, with occasional barrel aging employed for added complexity. Rosé wines are produced via the more demanding saignée method, yielding greater definition and depth, while non-vintage cuvées are aged a minimum of 24 months on the lees and vintage wines at least 36 months, resulting in Champagnes that emphasize precision, structure, and vineyard character.
