Tasting Notes

The nose opens with tart red cherry, sour plum, and dried cranberry, followed by notes of crushed stone, subtle herbal tones, and a faint savory edge. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and tightly structured, with fine-grained tannins and a pronounced mineral line.

Pairing Block

Food Pairing

Blaufränkisch’s bright acidity, moderate structure, and gently spicy profile make it especially suited to savory dishes with herbs, char, or earthy components. Its balance of freshness and depth complements grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and simple stews, while its lift keeps richer foods feeling energetic. The wine pairs best with pork, roasted poultry, mushroom-driven plates, and Central European–leaning fare where brightness, subtle spice, and clean structure highlight its versatile, regional character.

About the Producer

Founded in 2003 and based in Carnuntum in eastern Austria, Johannes Trapl farms about 15 hectares of organically and biodynamically managed vineyards focused on Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, and Grüner Veltliner. The estate works with loess, gravel, and limestone soils that sit between the Danube River and the Carpathian foothills, and vineyard work emphasizes low yields, hand harvesting, and biodiversity. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, often with partial whole clusters, and the wines are aged in stainless steel or large neutral barrels with minimal intervention.
