Tasting Notes: Garnet red color with ruby hues; fragrant scent of dried flowers and geranium aroma, with light fruity notes reminiscent of raspberry; dry, warm, soft, slightly tannic, and highly drinkable Barbaresco-esque flavor. If you’ve enjoyed previous vintages of this wine over the years, the real charm of the 2022 vintage is its approachability; there’s a striking immediacy in the generosity of fruit here, which comes into balance with the wine’s tannins and acidity to allow for immediate enjoyment without decanting.

Pairing: This Nebbiolo drinks well with fresh cured meats, hard aged cheeses, lamb, herb roasted chicken, wild mushroom risotto, pasta with Italian meat sauce, and a good ol’ fresh burger. This Quick Lamb Ragu by Alison Roman is sure to please!

About: Located in Treiso, in the Cuneo province of the hilly Italian region of Langhe, the Ca' del Baio winery was founded in 1929 by Giuseppe Grasso. It is now run by his great-grandson Giulio, his wife Luciana and their three daughters Paola, Valentina and Federica. Ca' del Baio Langhe Nebbiolo Bric del Baio 2020 is a very personal wine made with Nebbiolo grapes collected by hand in early October from a selection of their best plots and is a clear example of the winemaking philosophy of this Piedmont winery. The vines were planted in 2001 in chalky-clay loam soils and look to the west to make the most of the afternoon sunlight

Tasting Notes

This opens with fragrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and rose petal, supported by notes of dried herbs and fennel. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely structured, with lithe, bright red fruit framed by Nebbiolo’s characteristic firm but fine-grained tannins. Acidity is lively, lending freshness and linearity through the mid-palate, and that carries through to a refreshing, red-fruited finish.

Food Pairing

Nebbiolo from the Langhe offers lifted aromatics, firm acidity, and a clean, structured profile that make it especially suited to savory dishes with moderate richness and earthy or herbal components. Its balance of grip and freshness complements roasted meats, mushroom-driven plates, and pasta with simple, savory sauces, while its clarity keeps more delicate preparations focused.

About the Producer

Founded in 1870 and based in Treiso in the Barbaresco appellation, Ca’ del Baio is a family estate now run by the Grasso family, farming roughly 25 hectares of vineyards that include holdings in Asili, Vallegrande, and Marcarini. The domaine works with sustainable viticulture focused on Nebbiolo, alongside smaller plantings of Dolcetto, Barbera, and Riesling. All fruit is hand harvested, and fermentations use native yeasts, with aging carried out in a mix of large Slavonian casks and neutral barrels depending on the wine.
