Description
From: Letea, Dobrogea, Tulcea, Romania
Varietal: Băbească Neagră
Taste: In the glass, this sparkling rosé is a soft rose-petal pink with coral reflections and an energetic bead. The nose opens with wild strawberry, tart cherry, and pomegranate, underscored by crushed rose petals and a hint of pink peppercorn. On the palate, the wine is dry and lithe, with fine bubbles carrying flavors of red currant, raspberry skin, and grapefruit zest. A streak of saline minerality and subtle herbal lift reminiscent of tarragon and mint runs through the mid-palate. The finish is clean, zippy, and slightly savory, offering a refreshing citrusy cut that enhances its versatility.
Pairing: Sparkling rosé made from Băbească Neagră thrives with dishes that highlight freshness, acidity, and texture. The wine’s dry profile and bright red fruit notes make it particularly adept alongside seafood, lightly charred vegetables, and dishes with spice or tang. Start with general guidelines: pair with foods that can handle brisk acidity, complement its delicate fruit, and contrast its texture.
About:
Caii de la Letea is based in Letea, within Romania’s Danube Delta—Europe’s second largest river delta and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The winery takes its name from the nearby village and forest, both located in the Tulcea region near the eastern border with Ukraine. This remote setting, defined by shifting sand dunes, saline soils, and wild horses roaming semi-nomadic pastures, has become home to one of Romania’s most progressive wine projects. Caii de la Letea was founded in the early 2010s by entrepreneur Octavian Vintilă and a team of agronomists and engineers to reimagine Dobrogea’s historical wine culture using native grapes, modern technology, and ecological preservation.
