Taste: In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant ruby color with violet edges. The nose opens with notes of wild cherry, red plum, and raspberry, accented by hints of violet, sweet spice, and a trace of iron-rich earth. The palate is medium-bodied but zesty, driven by the grape’s naturally high acidity, which gives lift and energy to the ripe red fruit core. Bright flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate, and a touch of licorice carry through to the mid-palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. The wine finishes with a burst of cranberry and a lingering savory edge.
Pairing: Barbera’s signature acidity and moderate tannin make it one of the most versatile red wines at the table. About: Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno is based in the village of Barolo, where the family estate has produced wine from the Cannubi hill since the 1890s. What began as a tavern operation by Cavalier Francesco Borgogno in the mid-19th century, selling his own wine in his wife’s small osteria, has evolved into one of the region’s most steadfast family-owned wineries. Today, the estate continues under the direction of the fifth generation: Anna and Paola Borgogno, their daughters Federica Boffa and Emanuela Bolla, and Anna’s husband, Marco Bolla.
