Tasting Notes

Critical Acclaim:

93 Decanter. Review Date: 09/2024. Raveneau's village-level Chablis is a lovely, expressive wine with lemony fruit and a finely wrought mineral edge. The texture is fresh and crisp, but there is enough weight and heft to carry it through to an impressive finish. This wine should drink well soon after release, but it will continue to improve in the medium term. The grapes come from two parcels totalling 1.1ha – one on the back side of Montmains Premier Cru, the other at the base of Forêts Premier Cru, planted in the 1980s.(CC)

90-92 Wine Advocate. Review Date: 03/2025. Raveneau’s 2023 Chablis Village, issuing from two plots—one planted in the early 2000s and the other in the early 1990s—is opening in the glass to reveal notes of grapefruit zest, oyster shell and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied and ample yet racy, it concludes with a precise, saline finish. Raveneau has been producing this Chablis AOC bottling since the 2007 vintage, and its expressive personality will ensure a broad and long enjoyment window. Domaine Raveneau is one of the greatest estates in Chablis. This small 10-hectare domaine is one among a handful of bastions of artisanal winemaking in a region that embraced industrial winemaking with open arms, and it remains a beacon for connoisseurs of classical white Burgundy all over the world. In the era of premature oxidation, Raveneau’s wines have also emerged as some of the most dependable prospects for extended cellaring. A generational transition has been quietly effected: Bernard Raveneau retired on January 1, 2020, and was replaced by his daughter Isabelle; and Jean-Marie Raveneau retired on May 1, 2021, and was replaced by his son Maxime. Neither plan to change a tried-and-tested formula, and both are intimately versed in the domaine's secrets, so the future is secure.(KK)

91 John Gilman. Review Date: 02/2025. The 2023 Chablis villages bottling from the Raveneau family is also a very pretty and generous wine. It delivers a vibrant aromatic constellation of apple pear, chalky soil tones (with just a touch of oyster shell), lemon zest, fruit blossoms and a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and zesty in personality, with a good core of fruit, fine soil inflection, lovely balance and focus and a long, classy finish. This is excellent backend lift. (Drink between 2025-2050)

About the Producer

Domaine François Raveneau is a highly regarded family-owned grower-producer in the Chablis of northern Burgundy, founded in 1948 when François Raveneau consolidated vineyard parcels, including those from his wife’s Dauvissat family, and became the first in his family to bottle his own wine. Today the estate, run by François’s sons Jean-Marie and Bernard Raveneau with involvement from the next generation, farms roughly eight to ten hectares of Chardonnay entirely by hand across top vineyard sites, including three Grand Cru holdings (Les Clos, Blanchots, Valmur) and multiple Premier Cru plots (such as Montée de Tonnerre and Butteaux). The domaine applies traditional viticulture and winemaking: low yields, manual harvest, indigenous-yeast fermentation, and extended élevage in older barrels (feuillettes) to preserve purity and terroir expression with minimal new oak influence. Raveneau’s Chablis are produced in very limited quantities, prized for their combination of crisp acidity, mineral intensity, and aging potential, and are widely considered among the top examples of the appellation.
