Valle dell’Acate is based in Acate, a historic winegrowing town in the Ragusa province of southeastern Sicily. The estate has long been associated with the Jacono family, whose viticultural history in this area dates back to the 19th century. The current winery, however, reflects the vision of Gaetana Jacono, who represents the sixth generation of the family to be involved in wine production. Since taking over, Gaetana has transformed Valle dell’Acate into one of Sicily’s benchmarks for quality native grape production, particularly for Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Her dual role as both viticulturist and advocate for the wines of southeastern Sicily has brought renewed attention to the region’s unique terroir and indigenous varietals.
The estate cultivates about 100 hectares, split between estate-owned vineyards and closely managed leased parcels, all of which are worked under sustainable farming practices. Although not fully certified organic, Valle dell’Acate has long implemented low-impact viticulture practices, including grass cover to control erosion, minimal irrigation, and hand harvesting to preserve berry integrity. Yields are intentionally kept low to maintain concentration, particularly for Frappato, a naturally lighter and more aromatic variety.
