Description

From: Chassagne-Montrachet, Bourgongne, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir

Taste: The wine displays a brilliant ruby-red hue, characteristic of young Pinot Noir, with light garnet reflections at the rim. The bouquet is vibrant and inviting, offering aromas of ripe red berries like cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry. Subtle earthy undertones, a hint of dried herbs, and a touch of violet add complexity to the nose.
The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and fresh acidity. Flavors of red currants and cherries dominate, with a delicate spiciness and a whisper of forest floor. The finish is smooth and balanced.

Pairing: Coq au Vin, a classic French dish of chicken braised in red wine with mushrooms, onions, and bacon, harmonizes with the wine’s red fruit and subtle spice. Similarly, Boeuf Bourguignon, Burgundy’s signature beef stew slow-cooked with red wine, carrots, and herbs, finds balance in the wine’s acidity and delicate tannins. For a lighter option, duck breast with cherry sauce (Magret de Canard) complements the wine’s red berry notes, while its richness pairs seamlessly with the sweet-tart cherry glaze. The earthy nuances of the wine make it an excellent match for Escargots à la Bourguignonne, where garlic-parsley butter adds depth to the pairing, or a mushroom tart, which enhances the wine’s forest floor undertones. For a vegetarian option, Ratatouille, a medley of zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers, brings out the wine’s freshness and herbal notes. Finally, the silky tannins and vibrant fruit of the wine pair beautifully with soft French cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or Époisses, rounding out a selection of classic, satisfying combinations.

About. Domaine Philippe Colin reflects the unique terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet. Although the venture was founded in 2004, Philippe Colin’s roots in winemaking stretch back generations. Philippe grew up in the renowned Domaine Michel Colin-Deléger, where he learned the art of viticulture and winemaking alongside his father, Michel, and brother, Bruno.

In 2004, the Colin family estate underwent a significant transition when Michel retired, and the brothers divided the family vineyards into two separate entities. This move allowed Philippe to establish Domaine Philippe Colin, built on respecting tradition while embracing modern techniques to enhance wine quality. His vision was clear: to create wines that showcase the complexity and elegance of the Côte de Beaune, notably the prestigious vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Philippe Colin manages approximately 12 hectares of vineyards, focusing primarily on Chardonnay, which thrives in the region's limestone-rich soils. The domaine also cultivates smaller amounts of Pinot Noir. Philippe has holdings in some of the most esteemed Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards, including Les Chaumées, Les Vergers, and the iconic Le Montrachet, contributing to the domaine’s exceptional portfolio.

The estate’s philosophy emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. Philippe adopts a hands-off approach in the cellar to let the terroir shine. The grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and vinified using natural yeasts. For aging, Philippe prefers French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak to preserve the fruit's purity and the wines' minerality.
