Description
From: Metaxata, Kefalonia, Greece
Varietal: Mavrodaphne
Taste: In the glass, it is a deep garnet with ruby edges. Aromatically, it opens with notes of wild plum, black cherry skin, and Mediterranean herbs, followed by hints of dried rose, pine resin, and an earthy, ferrous edge. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with a core of tart red fruit framed by crushed stone and dry spice.
Pairing: The structure and herbal-fruited character of Dry Mavrodaphne make it highly adaptable for dishes with umami, earthy tones, or slow-cooked depth. Start by matching the wine’s acidity with tomato-based sauces and the tannins' grip with protein. It’s a natural pairing for braised lamb shanks with tomato and cinnamon or beef stew with rosemary and olives.
About: Haritatos Vineyard is located near the village of Metaxata in the Livatho region of Kefalonia, Greece. The family estate has been in continuous use since 1863 and today encompasses vineyards, olive groves, orchards, gardens, and a 19th-century manor house. The estate sits in a unique microclimate defined by clay-loam soils, Mediterranean flora, and proximity to both the Ionian Sea and Mount Aenos. The wines are produced under the PGI Slopes of Aenos designation, with all bottling and farming carried out on-site by the Haritatos family.
