Comforting aromas of baked cherries and blueberries, accentuated by the sweetness of warmed baking spices define the nose. On the Rounded and velvety in texture, where an abundance of cola notes balances harmoniously with savory and ripe red fruit flavors that all lift with a pop of fresh acidity on the finish. (JP)
Every now and then you come across a wine that reminds you just how diverse and fascinating Piedmont can be, and this is one of them. The 2021 Cascina Alberta "Giacone" is a beautiful, terroir-driven Barbaresco from a small, 5-hectare family estate, but it has a wonderful secret that makes it truly special. Here's the cool part: a significant portion of their vineyards are planted to Nebbiolo Rosé. Now, don't let the name confuse you—this isn't a rosé wine. Nebbiolo Rosé is a rare, historic clone of the Nebbiolo grape, known for its paler color and, most importantly, its incredibly intense aromatics. In a classic, brilliant vintage like 2021, this results in a Barbaresco with a soaring perfume. The nose is an explosion of crushed rose petals, wild strawberry, orange peel, and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, the wine is elegant and precise, with fine, silky tannins and vibrant acidity that carries the bright red fruit to a long, savory finish. It’s less about power and more about aromatic beauty and finesse. For lovers of aromatic, elegant Nebbiolo, this is a fascinating and delicious look into the diversity of the grape. A real insider's wine. - Orazio Campoli, K&L Buyer, Review Date: 10/2025
