Description
From: Catalunya, Spain
Varietal: Garnatxa Negra (Grenache Noir)
Taste: Affordable and tasty Garnatxa from a special seaside appellation called Alella, on
the Costa Brava of Catalunya. The vineyards at this winery directly face the sea on high
hilltops, nearly cliffs, and the ocean air profoundly impacts the freshness of a variety
that otherwise can be very robust and hearty. Cherry, strawberry, bramble,
Mediterranean herbs, medium body, low tannin. Easygoing, great red for picnics and
switching up the standard Pinot Noir or Gamay for lighter red game.
Pairing: This wine has us craving foods that match the freshness we experience in its
balanced and light red fruit flavors. The mango chutney makes David Tanis’ recipe for
Spicy Corn Pakoras with Mango-Tamarind Chutney work so well! Other favorites
include serving this with homemade tacos, ham and cheese sliders, a smoky paprika tofu
scramble, chicken teriyaki, and tofu/chicken/pork sweet and sour with fried rice.
About: In 1991, Josep Maria and Cristina Pujol-Busquets established the Alta Alella winery on the 19th-century Can Genís estate, located in the small DO of Alella within Catalunya. Alta Alella cultivates 60 hectares of vineyards planted on slopes and terraces in the Serralada de Marina Natural Park, just 2 km from the Mediterranean Sea and 10 km
from Barcelona. The winery has always practiced certified organic farming techniques,
creating a well-balanced ecosystem that respects the native flora and fauna.
