Taste: In the glass, the wine shows a bright ruby color of medium depth. Aromas open with fresh violets, red cherry, and small wild berries, joined by subtle herbal and mineral notes. On the palate, it is lively and balanced, with fine, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and persistent.
Pairing: Sangiovese’s natural acidity and moderate tannins make it one of Italy’s most adaptable red grapes at the table. It pairs well with tomato-based sauces, grilled vegetables, and lean proteins.
About: The current era of Tenuta San Giorgio starts in 2016, when it was bought by the Tipa Bertarelli Family, founders of the ColleMassari Estates group, which also includes Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino, Grattamacco in Bolgheri, and Castello ColleMassari in Montecucco. Their leadership brought a renewed focus on precision, sustainability, and the nuanced expression of Sangiovese. Under their direction, the estate underwent major renovations, including a new cellar and expanded vineyard plantings. Today, it encompasses 360 acres (about 146 hectares), with 62 acres (25 hectares) under vine, about 10 to 20+ years old, and surrounded by over 110 hectares of natural forest that sustain local biodiversity and create protective buffers for the vines.
About: Tenuta San Giorgio operates from the village of Poggio San Giorgio in the Colli Piacentini zone of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. A project that represents a modern take on regional heritage, Tenuta San Giorgio began producing wine in earnest with the 2017 vintage. The estate is owned by the Ferrari family—not to be confused with the Trentino-based sparkling wine house of the same name—and is currently led by Lodovico and his son Bernardo Ferrari.
