From: Sicily, Italy
Varietal: 70% Frappato, 30% Nero d'Avola
The 2020 Occhipinti Rosso was named SP68 after a county road called Strada Provinciale 68, along which Arianna Occhipinti's organic and biodynamic vineyards. SP68 happens to be one of the oldest wine routes ever documented, used by generations of farmers to bring their wines to the coast of Sicily. The wine is refreshing and pleasant, with a delicate taste that expresses the warmth and vitality of the land it comes from.
Tasting Notes: "A vivid ruby color, purple flecked and slightly turbid in the glass, young wine with nothing taken out. It’s nervy too. Cherry, strawberry, and violet perfumes lead to a bright, fresh palate. Cherry, strawberry, mulberry, and cranberry are all in tension with a streak of saline minerality and a hint of licorice. There’s little tannin but outstanding balance and texture, thanks to fresh acidity and relatively light alcohol." –Paul Howard, winealchemy.co.uk
Pairing: This balanced, energetic expression of Frappato and Nero d'Avola pairs nicely with a variety of pasta dishes, white meats, cured meats, cheese, or even sardines.
