Description
From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône Valley, France
Varietal: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre
Taste: In the glass, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is deep ruby with violet reflections. The nose opens with dark cherry, black plum, and roasted garrigue layered with licorice, crushed rock, and a touch of smoked meat. It delivers a full-bodied structure framed by ripe yet firm tannins on the palate, with concentrated flavors of blackberry, black tea, and dried thyme. A mineral lift on the mid-palate and a faint gamey nuance echo its Mourvèdre component. A streak of freshness sustains the wine’s energy through the finish, which is long, earthy, and lightly spiced.
Pairing: This wine's structure and savory complexity pair well with dishes that emphasize deep flavors, a bit of fat, and seasoning from herbs or spices. Grilled or braised lamb—particularly with rosemary or anchovy accents—matches beautifully with the wine’s dark fruit and earthy tones. A Provençal daube of beef with olives and orange zest taps into the wine’s notes of garrigue and spice. Lentils cooked with Toulouse sausage offer a satisfying textural and flavor complement.
About: Mas de Boislauzon operates from the commune of Orange in the southern Rhône Valley, just north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate has been in the Chaussy family for several generations, but it was in the mid-1990s that siblings Daniel and Christine Chaussy began to reshape its trajectory. With Daniel leading the viticulture and winemaking and Christine handling much of the commercial direction, the duo elevated Mas de Boislauzon from a traditional mixed-agriculture domaine into a respected name in the southern Rhône.
