From: Sicily, Italy
Varietal: Grillo
Tasting Notes: Straw yellow in color with green reflections. The nose has strong notes of white peach and loquat, with floral aromas of Sicilian Spanish broom, jasmine, and almond flowers on the finish. On the palate, it is fresh, persistent, and has a remarkable acidity that is well-balanced with the alcohol. It has a long and soft finish.
"The 2020 Grillo Timpa is stunning, wafting up with exotic florals and citrus tones, as a more defind bouquet of tangerine, kiwi and candied ginger evolved with time in the glass. It filles the palate with silky waves of ripe tropical fruits, all kept in check through vibrant acidity and a twang of sour lime toward the close. Pineapple mingles with mango and papaya through the long, tension-filled finale, leaving the senses completely refreshed and aching for another sip.” –Eric Guido, Vinous, 91 points
Pairing: Though not the easiest vegetable to pair with wines, Grillo goes really well with zucchini-based dishes, especially with pine nut or pistachio pesto.
The Feudo Montoni cellars are located in a baglio (Sicilian style square court building) built in the heart of Sicily by a noble family in 1469. Vineyards have been planted on the high altitude estate for over 600 years, amongst nearby olive and wheat plots. The grandfather of the current winemaker, Fabio Sireci, purchased the Feudo Montoni estate in the late 1800s when he discovered a wealth of old vines on the property. Over the course of three generations of ownership, the winery has implemented and maintained sustainable farming methods, artisanal cellar practices, and renewable energy sources.
Timpa is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in the Sicilian word, “timpa” meaning strong slope. In fact, the vineyard climbs up a hill with a degree that exceeds 70%.
