Tasting Notes

Winery Notes: This Grand Cru is located just above the Montrachet Grand Cru on the Puligny side. Atop the climat, the slope becomes steeper and the soil more shallow. Further east, closer to the Montrachet, the soil deepens and turns dark red due to the increased presence of iron. The temperatures are slightly cooler than Montrachet because of the higher altitude, and the soils are rich with gravel. Thus, the wines usually show an intense minerality, the sign of the great Chevalier-Montrachet.

Critical Acclaim:

96-98 points Allen Meadows - Burghound
"Strikingly elegant, cool and restrained aromas are comprised by notes of citrus confit, mineral reduction, anise, exotic tea and the classic acacia blossom nuances. The almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors are at once succulent yet chiseled while the practically pungent minerality adds a sense of lift to the hugely long finish that is youthfully austere and Zen-like in its harmony. This is quite simply majestic in its class and grace and i s a wine that should age effortlessly for years. *Burghound Don't Miss!*" (6/2022)

97-99 pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "A little more lemon in the colour and notably more of the gunflint reduction. Pierre thinks this is at least in part typical of Chevalier. They are at the top of the vineyard, with just 30 hl/ha in 2020. Take your time and the fruit starts to push up through. All in white fruit, apples rather than pear or white peach, with still that smoky flinty quality in the background. Perfectly poised on the palate with length and class. Tasted: May 2022.:"

About the Producer

Domaine Leflaive, rooted in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717, has grown from Claude Leflaive’s early vineyards into one of Burgundy’s leading Chardonnay estates, now spanning 24 hectares in Puligny along with additional holdings in the Mâconnais. Built by Joseph Leflaive in the early 20th century and carried forward by later generations, the domaine is known for its early and full embrace of biodynamics, a shift led by Anne-Claude in the 1990s to restore soil health and sharpen terroir expression. The wines follow classic Burgundian methods: long, natural fermentations with indigenous yeasts, aging first in oak then in stainless steel, and light lees stirring. Today the domaine remains family-run under Brice de La Morandière, who continues its focus on vineyard vitality, precise winemaking, and the pursuit of purity across its grands and premiers crus.
