Description
From: Amyndeon, Macedonia, Greece
Varietal: Xinomavro
Taste: In the glass, the wine shows a bright purple-red color. The nose is complex and expressive, offering a typical Xinomavro bouquet of small red berries, ripe blackberries, and lifted notes of vanilla, clove, and black pepper. Subtle, leathery undertones and fine spice from oak aging are well-integrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with rounded, ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and a structured core.
Pairing: The wine’s structure, acidity, and savory core make it highly adaptable to a range of foods that offer richness, acidity, or aromatic lift. Look to regional classics like lamb shoulder slow-roasted with lemon and thyme or grilled pork skewers marinated in garlic and oregano. Tomato-based dishes pair exceptionally well. Consider stuffed eggplant with spiced rice and tomato or a rustic pasta with lamb ragù and mint.
About: Alpha Estate is located in the town of Amyndeon (Αμύνταιο), in the far northwestern corner of Greece, in the region of Western Macedonia. This remote, high-altitude plateau near the borders of North Macedonia and Albania is among the country’s coolest and most continental winegrowing areas. It’s the heart of the PDO Amyndeon appellation, one of Greece’s most important zones for Xinomavro, and is distinguished by its lakes, cold winters, and dramatic diurnal swings. Founded in 1997, Alpha Estate originated as a collaboration between viticulturist Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux-trained oenologist Angelos Iatridis, both of whom were born in the region and recognized its untapped potential for high-quality wine production.
