Taste & Critical Acclaim: 96 James Suckling. Review Date: 04/2022
Aromas of crushed stone, green peppercorn and black currant. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins. So rich and plush on the palate with ripe black fruit. Excellent, articulate acidity. Tobacco and leather come through. Powerful and expansive yet elegant with a sort of chalky understone
2019 Leonetti Aglianico- An incredible wine from this cooler vintage, the 2019 Leonnetti Aglianico is once again 100% varietal, that had extended aging for 44 months in terracotta amphorae, as well as new and neutral French oak barrels prior to bottling. Flavors of tar and tobacco leaf combine with brilliant blue fruits on the palate. Dense and nervy, with refined tannins, this is already neatly evolved stuff that will drink well for decades to come. Give this about 30 minutes of air if enjoying now. Drink 2025-2042- 96 points, Owen Bargreen
Pairing: The 2019 Leonetti Cellar “Serra Pedace Vineyard” Aglianico is a deeply structured, full-bodied red that calls for equally robust and savory dishes. With its layers of black cherry, fig, leather, and tar balanced by chalky tannins and bright acidity, this wine excels alongside rich, slow-cooked, or smoky foods. Classic pairings include charcuterie boards featuring cured meats and aged cheeses, as well as braised dishes such as oxtail, short ribs, or lamb shank, where the wine’s structure cuts through the richness and enhances the meat’s depth of flavor.
About: The 2019 Leonetti Cellar “Serra Pedace Vineyard” Aglianico is a striking and highly original expression of a grape seldom seen in Washington State, crafted with the same precision and dedication that has defined the Figgins family legacy since 1977. Leonetti Cellar—Walla Walla’s first commercial winery—was founded by Gary and Nancy Figgins, and today it remains one of the region’s most respected estates under the leadership of their son, Chris Figgins. Deeply committed to estate farming and vineyard expression, the family has built a reputation on world-class wines that balance power, structure, and purity. The Aglianico project, inspired by the family’s Calabrian roots and Chris Figgins’ fascination with Italy’s noble southern varietals, represents one of the most distinctive experiments in New World viticulture.
