Taste: The wine is a luminous garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim. The nose is elegant yet intense, unfolding in layers of dried rose petals, sour cherry, blood orange, and black tea, followed by undertones of anise seed, tobacco leaf, and crushed sandstone. On the palate, it is structured yet finely textured, driven by a high-acid backbone and firm, vertical tannins. The mid-palate reveals savory depth and precision, with notes of pomegranate, dried raspberry, and wild herbs, followed by subtle hints of leather, cedar, and a saline mineral finish.

Critical Acclaim: “The Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno 2019 Barolo shows a luminous ruby appearance and lean fruit weight. The bouquet follows up with crushed rose, dried cherry, licorice root and nectarine. I love the delicate, silky nature of the mouthfeel. This elegant wine has an accessible side, but it delivers a good value versus quality proposition.” Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 94 pts.

“Available in numbered bottles, the 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows ripe fruit with aromas that recall dried cherry skin or plum. That ripeness gives this wine a slightly heavier approach with sweet notes of almond paste, white chocolate and licorice. Some 16,000 bottles were made, but some of the wine was put aside; and we can expect a Riserva edition of this vintage to be released in 2025.” 93 Points, Wine Advocate

“Spicy with licorice, the 2019 Barolo Cannubi pours a rich ruby/garnet, with aromatics of baked cherry, pine, and savory porcini. This medium to full-bodied red is persistent and tension-packed, with ripe gripping tannins, a forward-driving acidity, and mouthwatering salinity. Allow it another couple of years and drink 2025-2040.” Jeb Dunnuck, 93 pts.

Pairing: Barolo from Cannubi, especially in a focused vintage like 2019, pairs well with dishes that complement its structure, acidity, and layered aromatics. Begin with foods that provide richness or umami to soften the tannins—slow-cooked meats, root vegetables, and earthy herbs are all excellent foundations.

About: Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno is based in the village of Barolo, where the family estate has produced wine from the Cannubi hill since the 1890s. What began as a tavern operation by Cavalier Francesco Borgogno in the mid-19th century, selling his own wine in his wife’s small osteria, has evolved into one of the region’s most steadfast family-owned wineries. Today, the estate continues under the direction of the fifth generation: Anna and Paola Borgogno, their daughters Federica Boffa and Emanuela Bolla, and Anna’s husband, Marco Bolla.
