Description
From: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone Valley, France
Varietal: Grenache
Taste: The wine pours a brilliant, medium ruby with flashes of crimson at the rim. On the nose, it opens with lifted aromas of raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, and dried rose petals, followed by accents of orange zest, white pepper, and crushed herbs. The palate is expansive, focused, and medium-bodied with satiny tannins and precise acidity. Layers of red berry fruit and sweet spice give way to nuances of blood orange, dried thyme, and a touch of licorice. The finish is long and aromatic, gliding rather than pushing, with a distinct mineral echo that speaks to the vineyard’s sandy soils.
Pairing: The purity and elegance of this old-vine Grenache make it a standout with dishes that showcase aromatic complexity, layered textures, and subtle spice. Herb-crusted lamb tenderloin or grilled quail with pomegranate molasses plays beautifully with the wine’s lifted fruit and floral notes.
About: Château de la Font du Loup is located in the commune of Courthézon, just northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, within the southern Rhône Valley. The estate’s name,“Fountain of the Wolf,” is drawn from a natural spring on the property and a local legend that wolves once came here to drink. It is one of the oldest domaines in the region and occupies a uniquely cool microclimate thanks to its higher elevation and proximity to the Mont Ventoux winds. The estate’s vineyards, many of which are planted at over 120 meters in elevation, benefit from consistent breezes and cool nights—factors that contribute to the elegance and freshness found in their wines.
