Taste: In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant, deep purple hue. The nose is lifted and aromatic, with violets, bergamot, and wild herbs framing fresh blackberry, mulberry, and dark cherry. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied yet energetic, with vivid acidity and fine, chalky tannins that give structure without weight. Flavors of juicy black fruit are layered with savory notes of olive tapenade, fresh thyme, and a touch of peppery spice. The finish is long and clean, carried by mineral tension and a lingering floral note.
Pairing: Start by pairing its moderate tannin with proteins that have some texture, match its acidity with dishes containing herbal or citrus elements, and let its floral-savoury notes complement spiced or aromatic cuisine. It works beautifully with foods like grilled lamb chops or roasted pork shoulder.
About: Fitapreta is based in Évora, in Portugal’s Alentejo region, and is the creation of António Maçanita, one of the country’s most dynamic and sought-after winemakers. Founded in 2004 alongside the late English viticulturist David Booth, the project began with a shared belief that Alentejo’s potential extended far beyond the ripe, full-bodied reds the region was most known for at the time. Their goal was to explore the region’s historic vineyard sites and its wealth of indigenous grape varieties through precise, site-driven winemaking. The name “Fitapreta,” meaning “black ribbon,” reflects both a nod to tradition and a willingness to weave in new ideas.
