Description
From: Meursault, Côte des Beaune, Côte d’Or, Burgundy, France
Varietal: Chardonnay
Taste: Pale straw in the glass with a slight greenish edge. The nose opens with bright aromas of lemon curd, white peach, and fresh-cut apple, followed by hints of hazelnut, flint, and a faint brioche edge from the lees aging. On the palate, the wine is taut and precise, with a linear core of citrus, green pear, and crushed shell minerality. A firm but polished acidity drives the wine forward, supported by a touch of creaminess from the lees. The finish is long and focused, echoing saline tension and a whisper of toasted almond.
Pairing: Chardonnay from the Côte de Beaune, especially in its unoaked or lightly oaked expressions, pairs best with dishes that reflect balance and detail. Focus on food with subtle richness or bright acidity to complement the wine’s structure and mineral core. Begin with general guidelines: match the wine’s acidity with lemon- or vinegar-driven preparations, align its texture with dishes that are lightly creamy or broth-based, and incorporate herbs or seafood to highlight the wine’s saline edge.
About: Pierre Morey operates from Meursault, a village in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy, long regarded for producing some of the most age-worthy and site-reflective white wines in the world.
The Morey family has been established in Meursault since at least the early 18th century, and Pierre represents the latest generation of vignerons. He took over the family domaine in 1971, following in the footsteps of his father, Auguste Morey. However, Pierre’s reputation began to shift beyond Meursault in 1988 when he was appointed the estate manager and winemaker for Domaine Leflaive—a post he held until 2008. During his tenure, Leflaive transitioned to biodynamic viticulture, a move that Pierre was instrumental in championing. This work influenced many others in Burgundy and helped elevate the conversation around sustainable and site-driven winegrowing at a time when chemical treatments were still widely accepted across the region.
