From: Gigondas, Southern Rhone, France
Blend: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre
Taste: The 2021 Gigondas Les Mourres offers a slightly more traditional vibe and sweet red and black fruits, spiced meat, garrigue, and bouquet garni-esque aromas and flavors. Based on 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, raised in concrete tanks and old barrels, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a ripe, sexy, fruit-forward texture, ripe tannins, and an excellent finish.
Pairing: Hearty meats served as roasts, braises, tagines (check out the recipe below), and casseroles or marinated and grilled are easy matches for the abundant flavors found in Gigondas wine. Of course, roast poultry or stews with chicken, pork, or lamb are other fantastic options, as are dishes that contain aged cheeses, mushrooms, garlic, cured meats, and even duck. Because of this wine's generous fruit and spice elements, hearty Asian fare with rice like duck or pork with Chinese Five Spice makes for a delicious match.

About. Many thanks to the importers for the following information. At the bottom of the Dentelles de Montmirail, in the lovely village of Gigondas, Claude Roux shares his passion for wine and terroir with his two children, Isabelle and Julien. Notre Dame des Pallières is an ancient family estate with lineage from the Middle Ages. It derives its name from the miraculous water source at the estate’s edge. This source is noted to have had the power to protect from the effects of the plague. Its history also includes a chapel where the Virgin Mary was said to have appeared. Today, all that remains is a wall and a wood statue, which can now be found in the Gigondas church. Their grandfather, Lucien Roux, officially gave it his name in 1935.
The vineyard covers thirty hectares and produces famous appellations respectful to nature: Gigondas, Rasteau, Sablet, Lirac & Côtes du Rhône. The estate gathers typical grape varieties from the Rhône Valley, such as Grenache, Mourvèdre & Syrah, to produce highly traditional wines.
This wine. Les Mourres is a cru site sitting in the shadows of the famed “dentilles,” vines here very old. The subsoil of limestone gravel, very poor, has the advantage of well-draining rainwater. (Fluvial alluvium of medium terraces dating from Riss Glacial Stage) This cuvée is 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvédre, from older vines, that was 80% destemmed and aged mostly in concrete tanks yet with a small portion in foudre.
Elaboration/Winemaking: The selection of old vines is manually harvested, 80% of the grapes are then scraped. The grapes remain in vats for more than 30 days, during which, reassembly and shedding follow one another with a control of temperature (maximum 30 °C), then withdrawal and pressing of the marcs whose wine said “press” is spread, aging is done in concrete vats.
