From: Bordeaux, France
Blend: Merlot
Taste: A deliciously concentrated aroma with brambly raspberry, strawberry, and currant notes with hints of mocha and sweet cedar. On the palate, this wine is generous, elegant, and structured, matching its vintage and regional style. If you love fantastic bistro-Bordeaux that goes above its price point, you’ll want to discover (or rediscover!) this wine.
Pairing: We’ve listed a few wine pairings for you below, but we love this with bistro fare. Pâté’s, steak frites, duck confit, and charcuterie would be our top picks, but lamb burgers or meatballs (check out the recipe below)- or even Swedish meatballs with gravy would be fantastic alongside this fine wine.
Other pairing ideas include:
Chicken Pizza. Right Bank red wines tend to be lighter in terms of the body. Thus, it is best to pair it with a chicken-based dish. Consider some sweet and savory plates for these wine styles. Chicken pizza with cilantro and red onions will offer you the best pairing, guaranteed.
Pulled-Pork Sandwiches. Another recipe perfect for Right Bank Bordeaux reds are the pulled pork sandwiches. This recipe is best for lunches and appetizers.
Shepherd's Pie. This recipe makes for an excellent food pairing with Bordeaux reds because you can add a lot of spices and blend it with different forms of chopped or ground beef.
Asian Style Pork Chops. Although Bordeaux is in France, a lot of Asian sauces and dishes accent Right Bank red wine flavors very nicely. Consider pork chops made in garlic, Asian sweet chili sauce, and Apple Cider vinegar.
Flank Steak. This recipe is usually on the leaner side. Therefore, it pairs perfectly with a Right Bank Bordeaux red wine because Merlot dominant Bordeaux wines are leaner themselves.

About. Lafond is the second wine of Chateau Mazeris, a historic property in Canon Fronsac built in 1769; in 1805 it was given as a dowry to Jeanne Modeste Couvrat when she married Jean Baptiste Cournuaud and has remained in that family ever since. Lafond is made predominantly from the estate’s younger vines. 100% Merlot, the wine shows some softness, but with just a bit of the bite characteristic of Fronsac.
“2016 looks to be a very good vintage in Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac. These wines traditionally have more sinew and elegance than some of the other right bank districts. The vintage plays to these strengths. The fruit qualities are attractive, nicely fresh and aromatic. These are nimble wines, not in the least overblown, but with good depth, fine acidity and very attractive texture to the tannins.” - Jeremy Lee Williams
