From: Göttlesbrunn, Carnuntum, Austria
Varietal: Blaufrankisch

Taste: In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with violet highlights. The nose opens with dark berry fruit of black cherry, boysenberry, and mulberry, interwoven with notes of licorice, crushed peppercorn, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and firmly structured, with bright acidity supporting flavors of black plum, sour cherry, and graphite. A mineral edge runs through the core of the wine, lending lift to its darker fruit tones. Fine-grained tannins carry the wine through to a dry, savory finish marked by notes of clove, dried thyme, and a hint of smoky spice.

Pairing: Blaufränkisch’s firm acidity and moderate tannin structure make it a versatile partner for dishes built around earth, char, and umami. Start by pairing it with lean meats, grilled or roasted vegetables, and foods that bring out spice or herbaceous components.

About. Weingut Glatzer is situated in the town of Göttlesbrunn, located within Austria’s Carnuntum wine region, a historic area east of Vienna with viticultural dating back to Roman times. Walter Glatzer established the estate in the 1980s, although his family had been involved in local agriculture for many years. By the early 1990s, Walter had transitioned the family holdings into a serious wine estate, expanding vineyard acreage and moving away from mixed farming to focus exclusively on wine production.  Walter’s son, Philipp Glatzer, has also begun taking a more active role in the winery, bringing the next generation into the family operation.

Weingut Glatzer is based in the village of Göttlesbrunn, situated east of Vienna in  Austria’s Carnuntum DAC. Although Walter’s family had been involved in local agriculture for many years, in 1987, Walter Glatzer first opened the gates to what was then a modest 5.4-hectare vineyard, following in the footsteps of the ancient Romans who had prized Carnuntum’s ideal conditions for growing grapes. Over the next several decades, Glatzer steadily expanded the estate to nearly 50 hectares and played a central role in Carnuntum’s shift from bulk wine production to high-quality, site-driven red wines.
