About. As the wine world continues to explore new territories, the vineyards of Chile have gradually stepped into the limelight. The Casablanca Valley, known for its crisp white wines, is now making waves with a new protagonist – the Prisma Rosé 2022.
This wine is a graceful expression of the region's unique terroir, encapsulating the character of its native soils and the special touch of the winemakers Ricardo Baettig and Jorge Martinez. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices in the Belen vineyard, a 66-acre estate planted in 2004, culminates in this exquisite vintage.
Unraveling the Character
The Prisma Rosé of 2022, a blend of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Cinsault, emanates a bouquet filled with notes of fresh citrus, crushed stone, passion fruit, grapefruit rind, and watermelon. This aromatic symphony can largely be attributed to the clay and granitic soils that the vineyard rests on. As you delve further into the tasting, you are greeted with a high-toned palate with a bright acid balance. Red fruit and peach flavors lead to a mouthwatering finish on a solid backbone of crushed wet rock and lingering watermelon juice notes.
The altitude of 600 feet, coupled with the Vertical Shoot Positioning trellis system, aids in crafting this delicate balance of flavors. The yield of 4.8 tons per acre underlines the concentrated character the vineyard brings to each bottle.
The Art of Winemaking
After the grapes are harvested, selective yeast is used to kick-start the fermentation process. This process begins with a 2-hour maceration, followed by a 20-day fermentation period, which aids in drawing out the finest characteristics of the grape. There is no stem inclusion, ensuring the fruit's purity shines through.
The rosé then undergoes élevage, spending three months in a stainless steel tank to retain its fresh fruity profile. A light cartridge filtration method removes any impurities while keeping the structure intact. After filtration, the rosé spends two more months on lees, adding depth to its flavor profile.
The Influence of the Casablanca Valley
The vineyard's location plays a crucial role in creating this vibrant rosé. Situated in the Casablanca, Itata, and Maule regions, the vineyard benefits from the coastal microclimate, marked by fog and significant diurnal shifts in temperature.
The cool climate and the 14-year-old vineyards of Casablanca Valley, from which the Pinot Noir is sourced, lend the wine a softer expression. This allows the strawberry-like fruitiness to be so bright that it seems to leap out of the glass!
As the Prisma wines continue to offer great value and classic typicity, the 2022 Prisma Rosé is a testament to the exceptional quality of the Casablanca Valley wines. The delicate blend of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, the sustainable farming practices, and the skilled hand of the winemakers result in a wine that captures not only the palate but also the spirit of the region.
Chile continues to make its mark in the global wine landscape, and the Prisma Rosé 2022 is a shining example of the potential this country holds for producing exquisite and diverse wines. As the vines in Casablanca Valley continue to mature, we can anticipate more exceptional vintages from this promising region.
