From: Getariako Txakolina, Basque country, Spain
Varietal: Hondarribi Zuri
Taste: This white wine made from Hondarrabi Zuri boasts high acidity, salinity, and an intriguing minerality that gives it its refreshingly clean taste. White peach, green apple, citrus and white flowers lead to the fresh, tangy essence of the Basque coast—slightly chalky notes suffused with hints of citrus and a pleasant fizz, reminiscent of the ocean breeze that caresses its vines.
Pairing: Txakoli is a versatile companion to a diverse range of gastronomic experiences. With its bright, slightly fizzy profile, it pairs perfectly with seafood, cured meats, and hard cheeses, such as the Basque sheep's milk cheese Idiazabal. This wine is also an excellent match for fried snacks and tapas, making it an ideal choice for casual socializing and feasting. Whether paired with delectable pintxos or enjoyed alone, it is an authentic taste of the Basque region's vineyards and a beautiful introduction to the world of Txakoli. About. The Basque region of Spain was once an outpost for whalers and fishermen, starting all the way back in the 11th century. Over the centuries, sailors would travel up the coast to the village of Getaria, trading for barrels of wine. Although whaling is long gone from these parts, the legacy remains; fish from the region’s culture of deep-sea fishing continues to play a significant role in the area’s imaginative cuisine, regarded by many as the best in Spain. This legacy inspires the label design of this fun and friendly 2023 Lasalde Elkartea Balea Txakoli.
