From: Kamptal, Austria
Varietal: Riesling
Tasting Notes and Critical Acclaim: High-toned aromas of lemon zest and white peach are immediately present, showcasing the wine's inherent freshness. As it opens up, subtler notes of green apple, wet stone, and a slight hint of jasmine unfold, painting a complex olfactory picture that perfectly represents the Kamptal terroir. On the palate, this Riesling is clean and vibrant. It possesses a crisp acidity that carries throughout the tasting experience, balanced beautifully by a generous extract. The palate mirrors the nose with flavors of juicy pear, ripe peach, and a touch of lemon zest. An underlying minerality brings structure and complexity, reminiscent of the distinctive Kamptal soil.
"Apples, grapefruit, lemons and peaches on the nose. Subtly honeyed, with a medium body and juicy stone fruit. Mineral and honeycomb notes come through on a long and creamy finish. Sustainable. Drink now or hold. Screw cap." –James Suckling, 92 points
Pairing: The versatile nature of the 2022 Schloss Gobelsburg Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Riesling makes it an ideal accompaniment to an array of dishes. The concentrated structure of Kamptal DAC wines harmonises beautifully with a wide range of culinary styles and dishes. This particular Riesling finds a perfect match in baked or grilled fish and seafood. The freshness and acidity of the wine cut through the richness of the fish, creating a balanced and satisfying dining experience.
Traditional Austrian dishes also pair wonderfully with this Riesling. Imagine a roast chicken, its skin crispy and golden, served alongside this wine. The fruity undertones and crisp acidity of the Riesling elevate the savory, umami flavors of the chicken, while the wine’s lively character and harmonious finish ensure it doesn't overwhelm the dish (or, check out the recipe below!).
Similarly, baked meats, with their hearty and robust flavours, can be well complemented by this Riesling. The wine’s balance of warm elements and cool, minty undertones refresh the palate, making every bite as enjoyable as the first.
For vegetarian options, consider pairing this Riesling with a vegetable curry. The gentle mouthful of juicy peach and pear flavors and the wine's structure and freshness can balance the heat and complex flavors of the curry, providing a well-rounded and enjoyable dining experience.

About. The 2022 Schloss Gobelsburg Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Riesling, a product of the esteemed Austrian winery Schloss Gobelsburg, is a glorious testament to the region's rich winemaking heritage. With a lineage dating back to the 11th century when the monks of Zwettl Monastery were granted their first vineyards, Schloss Gobelsburg has a storied history steeped in tradition and innovation.
A Beguiling Bouquet
The 2022 Riesling presents a captivating bouquet, redolent with vineyard peach and Gravenstein, creating an immediate impression of elegance and charm. On the palate, it is quite powerful, with generous extract and balance, underpinned by a crisp acidity that leaves a lasting impression.
The Vineyards and The Winemaking
Schloss Gobelsburg maintains several parcels in the Kamptal region's Erste Lagen, or 1st Growth, vineyards, including the mineral-rich, crystalline slopes of Gaisberg and Heiligenstein, which are planted with Riesling. These vineyards, with their unique soil composition of amphibolite volcanic sandstone, mica slate, and alpine gravel, give rise to the vibrant flavors found in the 2022 Riesling.
The young vines from which this wine is sourced are all less than 15 years old, a testament to the winery's ongoing commitment to rejuvenation and quality. Despite their relative youth, these vines produce a wine of outstanding depth and complexity, fermented and raised in stainless steel to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the distinct character of the terroir.
A Testament to Innovation and Individuality
At Schloss Gobelsburg, the future is about individuality and character. Under the guidance of Michael Moosbrugger, who was awarded the 'WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR' by the Austrian magazine Falstaff, the winery has developed the 'Dynamic Cellar Concept.' This novel approach foregoes the pumping of wine from one location to another, instead transporting it in 'barrels on wheels,' reflecting the winery's commitment to minimizing mechanical interference in the winemaking process.
