From: Burgundy, France
Varietal: Chardonnay
Critical Acclaim: BH 91 Burghound.com
Here too there is a vague whiff of the exotic with its array of white and yellow peach aromas that are laced with hints of citrus confit and passion fruit. There is excellent volume to the delicious generously proportioned medium weight flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the balanced, clean and agreeably dry finale. This too would benefit from having more depth, but my rating assumes that more will progressively develop.
From the lieu-dit in the most northern sector of Chassagne, bordering Puligny and close to the Grand Cru Criots Batard Montrachet. The vines here are 45 years of age and have a south-southeast exposure. The wine is aged on the fine lees for twelve months (sometimes more) before bottling. It is an ample and persistent wine that ages particularly well.
About. Nestled within the idyllic region of St. Aubin in the Côtes de Beaune area of Burgundy, France, the Domaine Henri Prudhon paints a picturesque tableau of Burgundian viticulture. With a history that can be traced back to 1945, when the founder Henri Prudhon and his wife Marguerite combined their vineyard holdings to establish the domaine, it stands as a testament to the timeless traditions of winemaking in Burgundy.
Henri Prudhon was a vintner and a respected figure in the Saint Aubin community, serving as Mayor for many years. His legacy is carefully preserved by his family, who actively contributes to the village's affairs. Gerard's son played a pivotal role in the estate's growth by strategically deciding to bottle their wines instead of selling them to local negociants. Today, Gerard's sons, Vincent and Philippe, have taken the reins of the domaine.
The Prudhon family's deep respect for Burgundian traditions is mirrored in their approach to winemaking. Their domaine encompasses 14.5 hectares of vineyards, producing approximately 90,000 bottles annually. With a manual harvest, the objective is to achieve a harmonious balance between sugar and acidity in the grapes. Their whites undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in barrels, while their reds undergo a short cold maceration followed by alcoholic fermentation. This intricate process reflects the family's vision to express the finesse and complexity of the terroir.
The 2020 Henri Prudhon Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur Gamay Blanc is a quintessential representation of the commitment and artistry of the Prudhon family. This wine emanates from the Sur Gamay parcel, located on a hillside overlooking the hamlet of Gamay, which is east of Saint Aubin. With its clay and limestone soils and southwest-facing vineyards comprising a mix of 20 and 60-year-old vines, Sur Gamay is a unique terroir.
