Region: Marche, Italy
Varietal: Verdicchio
Tasting Notes: White-green color. Ripe orchard and stone fruit notes are balanced by elements of lemon, fennel, clementine, and a touch of salinity on the nose. The palate matches the nose, with more tree fruits and citrus oil present, with almond on the finish. A great fit for anyone who loves Viognier, Northern Rhone white blends or Pinot Grigio’s with personality and are looking for something different.
Pairing: Because this white wine is so versatile with a number of different dishes, we’re sharing two recipes today. The first, Salt & Pepper Shrimp Rolls, by Kay Chun, highlights how well it’s bright, sea-influenced character matches dishes incorporate seafood, whether it be fried, fresh, grilled, steamed or baked. The second, David Tanis’ Midnight Pasta with Garlic Anchovy Capers and Red Pepper shows off how well fruit-forward, rich white wines play well with equally rich dishes that incorporate both fatty (ie cheese in this example) & vegetable (capers & red peppers) elements.
About. Col di Corte is located in the rolling green hills of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, about 20 km from the Adriatic. Giacomo Rossi took over the winery in 2011, after working in the film industry. His interest was piqued after working on a documentary called Natural Resistance, which follows several pioneers of the natural wine field in Italy. Giacomo started converting his vineyards to organics immediately, gaining certification in 2015, and the winery joined biodynamic terroir focused group Renaissance des Appellations in 2018. They have a low intervention approach in the winery, and have been using spontaneous ferments for all their wines since 2016. The vineyards of Verdicchio “Anno Uno” are grown in the district of San Pietro a Montecarotto on calcareous clay soils and have an average age of 15 years, Col di Corte’s youngest vines. The Vineyard joins the famous "Campo delle Oche" vineyard of Fattoria San Lorenzo. "The harvest of the grapes, strictly manual in small boxes, is carried out around the middle of September.
