From: Sicily, Italy
Varietal: Nero d'Avola
Nero d’Avola is an arid climate variety capable of being dry-farmed, and it loves the heat. In Sicily, many of the oldest Nero d’Avola vineyards are Alberello pruned or “head-trained” close to the ground so that they are resistant to high winds. In general, there tend to be a few expressions of Sicilian Nero d’Avola. More concisely, there are 2 main winemaking ideologies in play. One is a more fruit-forward, opulent, and black-fruit-driven style that offers up coffee and chocolate flavors from aging in oak barrels. The other style (found in this wine) is much leaner and more elegant, with zippy red cherry fruit flavors, herbal notes, and very little oak aging (if any at all).
Tasting Notes: Organically grown Nero d'Avola that's fresh, fruit-filled and should be served slightly chilled. A touch of bay leaf and mint complements the volcanic soil, sweet red fruit and peppery spice on this wine's nose and palate. Delicious!
Pairing: This food-friendly wine is quite versatile with its pairing potential. It would be great with anything from burgers to oxtail soup, or even crispy fried pickles!
