From: Fiefs Vendéens, Loire Valley, France
Blend: Pinot Noir
Taste: 100% Pinot Noir, unoaked and high-toned with bright cherries and a mix of lovely fresh herbs—approachable and delicious. This wine should be served slightly chilled and falls into that awesome category of “charming and cheerful,” the “cranberry to your turkey” kind of red that points to the cheeky label. Rouquin de Jardin, where the redheaded gnome (Rouquin means red-head in French) is standing in a moonlit garden, without his pointed gnome hat but still sporting his shades, this time with a glass of red wine.
Pairing: An easy match with roast chicken, pork or an easy meal of pâté, cheese, and crunchy French bread. Its unoaked and bright red fruit with low tannin character make for easy pairing with a wide array of cuisine too. Salmon, asparagus and bacon, red pepper hummus and pita, and a medley of appetizer-type dishes work wonderfully alongside this type of wine. And, dishes that lean into umami flavors, mushrooms as an example, and dishes that include soy as another. Which is why we’re sharing today’s pairing by Mark Bittman for Fast Pot-Stickers. Santé!
