2018 Weingut Karl Lagler Grüner Veltliner, Burgberg Federspiel
Blend: 100% Grüner Veltliner the Wachau region of Austria.
The Lagler family has lived on this beautiful estate at Rote Torgasse since 1789. Yet, it was only in the late 1970s that the Laglers decided to go from grape-growing to winemaking. Instead of selling his grapes, Karl Lagler began producing first class, fruit-driven wines. His vineyards are found at top locations in Spitz like Steinborz, Tausendeimerberg, and Burgberg, where old vines combine with natural farming techniques and other quality-oriented measures to yield excellent results. All work is done by hand, including harvest. Today, the Lagler family is known as one of the most charismatic families in the Wachau, and their wines command respect among top restaurants worldwide. These wines represent the true character of the western area of the Wachau. The winery is centered around its 180 year -old cellar which is accompanied by a small hotel, a great starting point for wine travel in the Wachau.
To explain the term Federspiel in the Wachau: Named after a falcon often hunted in the Wachau, these wines are second on the three-tier classification system. They require a minimum must-weight of 17° KMW and 11.5-12.5% abv. Federspiel wines are typically classified as strong wines with a generous amount of character, but their relatively low alcohol content allows for more than just one glass.
Taste: From the Wachau region in Austria, an enticing Gruner with expressive aromas of granny smith apple, white pepper and lemon zest. Light body, but structured and powerful with racy, ripe tree fruits, hints of anise and creamy lees and minerals on the finish. Young and concentrated and great for a variety of food pairings. Sustainable practices.
Pairing: Weiner Schnitzel is a traditional Austrian dish made with thinly sliced veal cutlet that is coated with egg, crusted and then fried in butter or oil. The acidity and spice in Grüner Veltliner matches every bite of the creamy rich meat. Another perfect pairing borrowed from another cultural cuisine is Tonkatsu from Japan, a panko-breaded and fried pork cutlet that is served sliced into strips.
