Decanter, Burgundy 2018 Vintage Report Gevrey-Chambertin (10/20/2019)
(Domaine Denis Bachelet, Vieilles Vignes, Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France, Red) Small is definitely beautiful as far as this bijou Gevrey-Chambertin domaine is concerned, as it consistently produces some of the best wines in the appellation. Deeply coloured, as Denis Bachelet's Pinots often are in their youth, this comes from six different parcels across the village and is aged in 40% new wood. Plush, juicy and well balanced, it has a winning combination of raspberry and black cherry fruit and sculpted tannins. (Drink between 2021-2026) 93 points
Burghound By Allen Meadows
Burghound, Jan-20, Issue #77
(Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Villages Red) This is aromatically similar to the Côte de Nuits-Villages except that the sauvage component is even more prominent. The solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess an interesting mouthfeel in that it's at once caressing yet markedly powerful, all wrapped in a mildly warm finale. The tannins are firm but well-buffered and this could be enjoyed on the younger side if that's your preference. (Drink starting 2026) 89-91 points
Wine Advocate Rating (90 - 92) The Wine Advocate
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with notes of rose petal, loamy soil and grilled meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and an expansive finish. Broader and more muscular by comparison with the finer-boned, more incisive Evocelles, this is a classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin
Domaine Denis Bachelet Description
"Denis Bachelet began his 2018 harvest on September 2 and concluded it by September 7, and he is justly satisfied with the results. Textural and generous while avoiding extremes and nicely defined by site, this is a lovely vintage chez Bachelet, as well as one that is—by the standards of this micro-domaine—generous in volume. As well as tasting through Denis's superb range of 2018s, we revisited the suppler, more transparent 2017 vintage from bottle, which is another great success for Bachelet but one cut from very different stylistic cloth. As I remarked last year, followers of this estate will be familiar with the rudiments of the contemporary Bachelet style: old vines, destemmed berries and gentle extraction, followed by élevage in barrels, of which up to 30%—for the Charmes-Chambertin—are new and most of which derive from Tonnellerie Rémond. As I have reported in the past, Bachelet has been punching down less since the 2014 vintage, evolving in the direction of finesse and structural suppleness—an evolution most evident in his Gevrey Corbeaux—but even in a vintage such as 2017, his wines certainly don't lack depth. This is one of my favorite estates in Burgundy, and though small production and high demand make them hard to find, I encourage readers to seek out Bachelet's exquisite wines."
