From: Burgundy, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir
This wine comes from a vineyard located in the town of Flagey-Echezeaux in the place called Les Chalandins, near the lower part of the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot. Exposed to the south-east and at an altitude of 245 meters, it rests on a deep clayey-silty soil placed on the Bresse marl.
Taste & Critical Acclaim:
'The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chalandins offers brambly red berry fruit mixed with rose petal and damp earthy notes on the slightly muted nose. The medium-bodied palate features red cherries mixed with orange peel and apricot. This is cohesive and poised, the 50% whole bunch nicely enmeshed on the finish. Excellent.' - (90-92) points, Neal Martin, Vinous
'Glowing red purple. Three ages of fruit but the oldest is 35 years and a great pinot selection. Brilliant nose, perfumed cherries, just perfectly judged ripeness, a little touch of spice and clove from the barrel but the overall impression is of gloriously harmonious ripe and classy fruit. 45% whole bunch was used but does not show at all. Actually this cuvée has been a highlight of the Camille Giroud cellar for the past 15 years.' - 5 star wine. 92-94 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
'There is plenty of classic Vosne spice nuances present on the aromas of red raspberry, sandalwood, Asian-style tea and a hint of hoisin. The finer if perhaps not quite as voluminous or precise displays a highly beguiling texture, all wrapped in a firmer and more complex finale. This is very good and worth checking out plus it could be enjoyed on the younger side if desired.' - (89-91) points, Allen Meadows, Burghound.
About. Maison Camille Giroud ranks among the most venerable as well as the most dynamic of the boutique négociants in Burgundy. Founded in 1865, Giroud earned an impeccable reputation over the last 150 years as a specialist in traditional vins de garde. Their principal business model was to acquire wines from the top vineyards and after aging them in seasoned barrels, selling the fully mature wines.
In 2001, Giroud was acquired by a group of investment bankers led by wine collector Joe Wender and his wife, Napa cult vintner Ann Colgin. They hired wunderkind David Croix not only to manage the distinguished cellar but also to begin acquiring grapes and making first-class wines. Croix accomplished this goal with flying colors and has now been succeeded by the highly-talented Carel Voorhuis.
Maison Camille Giroud occupies a singular niche in Burgundy: it is at the same time among the most dependable and exciting sources of fully mature, traditional Burgundy, and one of the best sources for transparent, terroir-driven current-vintage Burgundy.
