Critical Acclaim and Taste
Our tasting note: Straight from Burgundy's Côte d'Or, Jean-Louis Chavy's Puligny-Montrachet enamors with concentrated aromas of flinty lemon confit, hawthorn blossom, green pear, and marzipan. Its palate reverberates with juicy stone fruit flavors alongside something that can only be described as ’spun gold' and a slightly toasty mouthfeel that trails off to a long, romantic finish.
Winemaker notes: Aromas of summer fruit and ripe plums. Good intensity on the palate with a steely focus and a long, intense finish.
“Notes of hay and dried corn husk combine with smokiness and lemon on the nose of this wine. The palate comes in with juicy stone fruit that is still clothed in lovely smokiness. Vivid highlights of freshness inlay the creamy, toasty mouthfeel. The long finish closes with more lemon and smoke.” –Wine Enthusiast, 93 points
“The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a promising bouquet of quite intense, mineral-driven citrus fruit and a subtle reduction that works well. The nicely poised palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and impressive energy on the finish. It may be a mere village cru, but it is a very good example.” –Vinous, 90 points
Pairing: Puligny-Montrachets’ balance, aromatic complexity, and purified style demand delicate but rich food. They are equally at home with poultry in sauce or veal fried with mushrooms. Their great distinction elicits a grateful response from foie gras, lobster, crawfish, and grilled or fried sea-fish. On the cheese-board, its natural allies are goat cheeses, Reblochon, or soft-centred cheeses like Brie de Meaux.
The Chavy family has lived in Puligny-Montrachet for more than two centuries but producing wine under their label only since 1986, when Gérard Chavy began bottling under his own domaine. When Gérard retired he passed on his holdings to his two sons. They split the holdings and decided to go their separate ways. Jean-Louis finds the perfect balance of applying traditional and organic vineyard practices while welcoming new technology in the cellar. His wine style emphasizes fruit purity and minerality with rich, opulent texture. They are classic Puligny-Montrachet wines made in a classic style showing elegance, grace and longevity.
