Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese in Southern Tuscany and was put on the map by Elisabetta Geppetti, the winemaker of the estate. The southern Maremma, where this wine is made, is unique in Tuscany due to its coastal hills. The combination of altitude and sea breezes moderate the heat and produce an immensely fresh and elegant style of wine.
Tasting Notes: The Fattoria le Pupille 2017 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is a beautifully enriched and nicely concentrated expression. This hot vintage red opens to dark cherry, blackberry, dark earth, and tobacco. The wine shows good balance, despite all the scorching temperatures and rainless weeks of the summer growing season. This Riserva puts forth a delicate and subdued personality against all odds. It speaks of the hard work achieved to tame the unruly intensity and exaggerated richness of the vintage.
