Dried flowers, savory herbs, citrus peel, crushed rocks and white pepper all develop in the glass. The natural power of old vines and a cool micro-climate yield a Chablis of real distinction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with terrific depth and concentration, racy acids and exquisite textural finesse. Impeccably balanced, this is a strikingly elegant, complete Butteaux that's somewhat reminiscent of the domaine's 2010, though I suspect it will drink well sooner than that wine. (WK)"(8/2019)

"The 2017 Butteaux from the domaine is absolutely classical in style and personality, despite being one of the more frosted premier crus in the Raveneau lineup. The bouquet is pure and beautifully expressive, delivering scents of pear, lemon zest, a touch of tart orange, chalky soil tones, incipient notes of paraffin and a lovely floral topnote redolent of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and shows off excellent mid-palate depth, with precise and complex minerality, bright, snappy acids and excellent focus and grip on the very long finish. There is a nice sense of reserve to this wine on the palate that augurs very well for its long-term development. (Drink between 2023-2060)" (12/2018)

Averaging 50 years, while Forêts has less clay and younger vines. First up come chiselled marine notes. Much tighter than Montée de Tonnerre but with similar power, excellent aftertaste, with tingling saline inflections." 91-93pts Neal Martin: "The 2017 Chablis Butteaux 1er Cru perhaps does not quite deliver the same complexity as Raveneau’s other Premier Crus at the moment, but it is more surly and backward in style. The palate is well balanced with a hint of orange rind and quince on the entry, a delicate touch of spice (curry leaf?) on the mid-palate and fine tension towards the focused and quite persistent finish. It actually gets better as it goes along but it is the one Premier Cru that is keeping to itself in barrel."-writing for Vinous
