Region: Brunello di Montalcino, Italy
Varietal: Sangiovese
#12 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2021
Complex on the nose, with distinctive nuances of ripe red fruit and spices such as black pepper and licorice. The same ripe red fruits continue on the palate, accompanied by vanilla notes. Very long finish.
Critical Acclaim

Broad and mouthfilling, exuding floral, black cherry, blackberry, graphite and stony mineral flavors. Powerful, yet reined in by the vivid acidity, with tannins that are refined and well-integrated. Shows terrific balance and length.

Aromas of sweet berries and orange peel with some dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a succulent finish. Nice citrus undertone here.

Poggio Landi sources grapes from three vineyard locations across the region, Montosoli, La Crociona and Castelverdelli. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has aromas of dried red plum, cedar, and pine resin. The palate has a profile of dried cherry, tomato leaf, and Mediterranean herbs, with refreshing acidity and drying tannins. The 2016 Brunello was aged for 38 months in large French oak.
Pairing: For a sure thing stick to rich creamy risottos, lamb or sausage ragout, and stewed and braised meat dishes. The complexity of these recipes harmonize with the complex taste and aroma of Brunello. Avoid anything spicy or piquant. These Garlic Braised Short Ribs With Red Wine are an excellent choice.
About: One of the pinnacles that the Sangiovese grape variety can achieve is Brunello di Montalcino.
Brunello di Montalcino is small wine region in southern central Tuscany, producing particularly impressive wines from the Brunello grape – a local strain of Sangiovese. All Brunello di Montalcino wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown on the slopes around Montalcino – a classic Tuscan hilltop village 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Siena.
Poggio Landi is a well-regarded wine estate based in the commune of Torrenieri, just northeast of the winemaking hub of Montalcino, in the rolling hillsides of southern central Tuscany.
The estate boasts 75 hectares (185 acres) of vineyard and produces a small range of Brunello di Montalcino wines, covering the standard Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino, a Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva and the top cuvée: Chiuso del Lupo.
