2016 Drouhin Pouilly Vinzelles
Blend: 100% Chardonnay
From: Maconnais, Burgundy, France
Since 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a reputation for wines that primarily reflect their individual terroir and vintage. Faithfully preserving the individuality of each appellation, the Drouhin firm constantly strives for wines of breed, finesse and elegance. A balance of tradition and modern techniques characterizes Joseph Drouhin winemaking and vineyard management: on site nursery, plowing, leaf removal, 100% hand harvesting, open fermenters, fermenting and aging in oak. As a result of its historic location deep in the heart of Beaune, the quality of its vineyards and the expertise resulting from years of experience in the cultivation of vines and traditional vinification, Maison Joseph Drouhin is uniquely placed to uphold authentic Burgundian style.
Starting with Joseph Drouhin, who founded Maison Joseph Drouhin over a century ago, a great estate has evolved with important holdings in Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Chablis and, most recently, Oregon. And now twenty years after Philippe Drouhin first began introducing organic practices to the vineyards making up the family company’s domaine (estate), Maison Joseph Drouhin (MJD), has been awarded organic certification for all grapes grown within its vineyards beginning with the 2009 vintage.
This vintage produced wines of various styles, some with a rather high acidity level, others offering roundness. The main factor has been the frost. The vines hit by this severe spring frost
very often matured later, giving fairly nervous wines, whereas the plots spared by frost reached a more precocious maturity. Overall the Mâcon area did not suffer from the 2016 spring frost. The crop was good, homogeneous and of quality, with attractive wines offering various aromatic hints. Fresh, pleasant and appealing, the wines develop a fairly seductive spell.
The production area stretches south of Burgundy in the Mâconnais region, within 10km south-west of Mâcon. Less famous than its neighbour "Fuissé", it has been known since the Roman times; "Vincella" is still tinged with its specificities. The vineyard, located at an altitude of 250m (820 feet), on the steep slope facing east, is dominated by its fortified castle. The soils are clay and limestone rich in iron oxide.
The wine is aged in stainless steel vats and partly in oak barrels, for 6 to 8 months. The pressing is very slow so as to respect the fruit. Juices from the last pressings are not retained. Throughout the ageing process, decisions are taken only after careful tasting evaluation. The data obtained is completed through technical analysis. As with every other Joseph Drouhin wine, absolute priority is given to the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage.
Taste: Pale yellow colour with numerous bright green reflections. Intense persistent flavours of peach and white flowers harmoniously meshed together. On the palate, the wine is ample, fresh, intense, with reminiscent notes of ripe grapes, almond, fresh hazelnut and cinnamon. The mouth reveals an elegant wine endowed with a good structure.
Pairing: When young, pair a Pouilly-Vinzelles with fresh water fish, escargots de Bourgogne or choucroute with sausages and potatoes. After some age, they naturally partner with wild morels and chicken or duck with turnips.
