From: Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy
Varietal: Nekaj/Friulano
Tasting Notes: Nekaj is an intense golden color, partly from the ripeness of the grapes, but also the extended skin contact, and its age. From a master of natural winemaking in Friuli, Damijan's wines are always bursting with aromatics and this is no different. With notes of ripe pear, baking spices, and honeysuckle, your mouth will be caressed by a honeyed elegance balanced with acid a slight bitter almond note that fades with the minerality of the terroir. Orange wine at its finest!
Pairing: I'd enjoy this with something like a smoked salmon or seafood risotto. It would also work well with pasta with tomato sauce (especially if you melted in some anchovies).
Vinification: The maceration begins in large oak barrels for 60 to 90 days. Once fermentation is finished, it gets aged in 20 or 30 hl barrels for 3 years and rests for 1 year in bottle. The presence of sediments is essential to keeping the wine alive and conserving it.
