From: Cadillac Cotes de Boreaux, France
Varietal: 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc
Château Carignan is located at Carignan de Bordeaux, 10km East of Bordeaux. The dominant grape variety, as for the other right bank appellations (Saint-Emilion and Pomerol), is Merlot. This variety thirves on the clayey limestone hillsides and offers supple, well-rounded and highly fruity wines. The estate covers 150 hectares, 65 of which are planted with vines. The vines lie on south facing clayey-limestone hillsides covered with stony gravel.Avg Vine Age: 30-35 years
Terroir: Clay and limestone soils covered with stony grave (gravel). Temperate oceanic climate, combined with the proximity of the Garonne River, provides a favorable balance for the cultivation of the vines.
Yields: 45 hl/ha
Winemaking: Fermentation in temperature controlled concrete tanks with micro-oxygenation. Plungings and rack and return depending on vintage. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels (1 and 2 year old French oak and 10% American oak). Blended after aging.
Tasting Notes: Color: Deep, dark red. Nose: Complex with a wide range of aromas. Palate: Long and fleshy with a tannic structure, concentrated flavors of black fruit, cassis, blackberries, cocoa and spices. Very balanced mouthfeel.
Pairing: Ideal with hot starters, red meat, stews, and cheese platters.
Critical Acclaim. 91 pt James Suckling, 90 pt Wine Enthusiast.
