From: Riverland, Australia
Blend: 80% Vermentino, 20% Fiano
Both the Vermentino and the Fiano grapes for this pet nat were grown on the Ricca Terra vineyards in a South Australian wine region known as the Riverlands. These vineyards are located in the township of Barmerara, a name that means “water place” in the native aboriginal Ngawadj people’s language due to its proximity to Lake Bonney and the Murray River as it flows through the Riverlands. Barmera has a dry climate with hot summers, warm days, and cool nights in the winter. This makes it suitable for hot climate Italian varietals like the Vermentino and Fiano used in this blend because they don’t need as much water.
Tasting Notes: A lively fusion of salty, herbaceous, and citrus aromas, with hints of jasmine and lemongrass and a slight note of meringue. The wine hits the palate with a gentle fizz surrounding a core of ripe yellow apple, poached pear, and white nectarine.
Pairing: The diversity of herbal, fruit, and citrus flavors present in this light, refreshing wine make it a versatile tool for pairing with food. It would be great with any sort of custard and citrus-driven desert on the sweet side, and with Vietnamese pork and/or noodle dishes on the savory side.
