Blend: Pinot Noir
From: Stajerska, Slovenia
Taste: The color of watermelon juice, this ripe and citrus-driven pet-nat bursts with flavors of pink grapefruit and tart strawberries. Lively bubbles, racy acidity, and wafts of wildflowers will have you feeling those summer vibes.
Pairing: Pair this wine with any sort of picnic fare, but I especially like the idea of this Double-Tomato Pasta Salad by Ali Slagle (NYT Cooking). It will yield 4-6 servings and take about 35 minutes to prepare.
Peter Gönc is the winemaker for two Slovenian wineries: Gönc Winery, his family homestead winery founded in 1936, and Grape Abduction Company. The regions and borders of Slovenia have gone back and forth between the last century, which of course always affects the culture and trickles down even to grapes and wines made.
Named ‘Canvas’ as an homage to Peter’s father who created the canvas for Peter to create his new and exciting wines on. Peter is also an ardent believer in the power of music. Some of his cuvées are named for famous musicians/songs, and he’s even been known to play music to the grapes after a long day of picking!
