The Spumante Brut Blanc de Blancs of Villa Sparina comes from the vineyards of the Piedmont company, in the municipality of Gavi, in the province of Alessandria. It is mainly obtained from Cortese grapes, harvested and harvested in September. After a minimum 36 months on the lees, this sparkling wine expresses its identity: full, intense and with a good balance between acidity and minerality. Cortese is an Italian white grape variety most closely associated with south east piemonte, in the province of Alessandria where it was first recorded in the early 17th century. No relatives have so far been identified. Total plantings had reached almost 3,000 ha/7,000 acres by 2010 and it is the basis of no fewer than nine docs. Its most highly regarded wine is gavi, produced initially to serve the fish restaurants of Genoa and the Ligurian coast not far to the south. The Cortese dell’Alto Monferrato a few miles west, like the Cortese grown on the Colli Tortonese, rarely achieves the ripeness, or winemaking proficiency, of Gavi. At its best, the wine is clean and fresh. The use of oak is usually misguided.
The Villa Sparina estate was purchased by the Moccagatta family in the late 1970s long before anyone could imagine how popular Italian white wine would become in the decades to follow.
Villa Sparina’s vineyards stretch over 70 hectares in the northern section of the Gavi appellation where the clay marl soils alternate with diluvial and gravelly soils, ideal for the production of richly flavored white wines with immense aging potential.
Lying at altitudes between 250-300 meters a.s.l., the growing sites benefit from the maritime influence of the Mediterranean, about an hour’s drive by car. The winery vinifies its Cortese grapes in a variety of styles, including a lighter-style expression of Cortese blend from vineyards approximately 30 years in age; the richer,age-worthy Gavi Rotondo from 40-year-old vines; and a sparkling wine aged on its lees for 30 months.
The winery also grows and vinifies Barbera grapes, including a fresher style, stainless-steel aged 100 percent Barbera and a richer barrique-aged cru known as Rivalta, also 100 percent Barbera. The winery is also known for its distinctive bottle shape. It was inspired by an old bottle that was discovered in the estate’s historic cellar.

Taste: White flowers, Peach, Honey, Fruit with yellow flesh. Fruity with a scent of peach, fresh and well balanced. A pure, rich sparkling wine with a full body and a round texture. Flavorful. Lots of character and beauty.
Pairing: It is well suited to the aperitif moment, it is also excellent to accompany light appetizers.
