From: Tuscany, Italy
Varietal: Syrah
Tasting Notes: A ready-to-drink Syrah originating from younger vines. Deep shiny red; fragrant brushwood nose; blackberry, balsamic and spicy notes, licorice root (reglisse), smoked-meat, and tea-leaf and wet-earth character to balance out all that delightful fruit. There are even hints of orange peel here, and it comes through on the palate as well, finishing with silky tannins and fresh length.
You'll love this if you've hunted for food-friendly, versatile Syrah wines but have grown to avoid sapid, jammy, blueberry flavors.
Pairing: While many of the usual suspects apply here (really any dish originating from Tuscany, braises, grilled meats and vegetables, and stews), a simple but perfect pairing for this wine is a classic Pappa al Pomodoro, essentially a thick slice of bread with tomato soup. Martha Rose Shulman of NY Times Cooking writes “Pappa means pap, which is what this soup is. If you ever needed proof that stale bread needn’t go to waste, this soup is it. And this stale bread recipe can be made with canned tomatoes, so you can make it throughout the year. When the weather is hot, you can serve this at room temperature.”
The history of Tenimenti d’Alessandro is linked to Cortona and its rebirth as a place of excellent wine production. Located in Manzano, down by Cortona (Arezzo) in south-east Tuscany, the property —today about 30 hectares of vineyards, certified organic since 2016 — was purchased in 1967 by the d’Alessandro family.
Starting from the 80s, the area has been subject to intense experimentation in order to determine the very best varieties for its soils and climate conditions.
